In a significant development, representatives from 20 nations gathered on Saturday in Ukraine to address the ongoing conflict and climate finance solutions. They reached a common consensus, reshaping the roadmap, focusing on regional integrity and the use of force in line with United Nations Charter principles.
Shifting Focus on Global South in Multilateral Forum
With the aim of deepening the focus of the global multilateral forum, a joint statement consisting of 83 paragraphs removed the explicit condemnation of Russian aggression against Ukraine, which was present in last year’s Delhi Declaration.
A Shift in Tone and Approach
The phrase “most members strongly condemn the war” saw several changes. Instead, G20 member nations agreed to adhere to the principles of the United Nations Charter regarding regional integrity and the use of force.
India’s Diplomatic Influence :
Following the initial announcement of unanimous agreement by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Indian Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar stated on Saturday, “Considerable time has been spent, especially in recent days, on geopolitical issues centered around the conflict in Ukraine.” A joint declaration ensued.
Global Unity in Testing Times :
Jaishankar further emphasized, “Everyone contributed because everyone came together for a common consensus, but emerging markets have provided special leadership, and many of us have a strong history of working together.”
This accomplishment underscores India’s diplomatic prowess at a time when global alliances are evolving. Concerns had been raised that ongoing conflicts involving Russia and China might hinder Delhi’s success in achieving unanimous agreement during this year’s meeting.
Continuing Debate on India’s Proposal:
Various leaders still need to vote on the proposal put forward by India, but it is being seen largely as a formality at this point.
