The BRICS consortium, composed of Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, has always been a force to be reckoned with in the global arena. This annual congregation of BRICS nations serves as a powerhouse of collaboration and strategic cooperation. For the past three years, the meetings have taken place virtually, but this time, the leaders gathered in person in the vibrant city of Johannesburg, South Africa.

The historic summit saw the participation of leaders from Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, with Prime Minister Modi arriving in Johannesburg a couple of days earlier to partake in this momentous event.

At the heart of this gathering was the unanimous decision to extend BRICS membership to six new nations. During the summit, South Africa’s newly elected president, Cyril Ramaphosa, addressed the assembly with enthusiasm, formally announcing the addition of Argentina, Iran, United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Ethiopia, and Egypt. This strategic expansion underscores the alliance’s commitment to bolstering its collective strength and enlarging its influence on the global stage.

The BRICS countries, each a significant player in the world economy, already contribute substantially to shaping the international financial landscape. Nations like Russia, China, and India have solidified their roles as economic powerhouses.

Remarkably, this expansion marks a pivotal moment for BRICS, as it welcomes several oil-rich nations into its fold. With this move, six of the world’s nine largest oil producers will find themselves as members of the BRICS consortium. This development presents the opportunity for BRICS countries to collectively manage and impact global oil resources, further amplifying their already substantial influence.

The New Members Statement

As the new member states integrate into the BRICS alliance, the world watches with anticipation to witness the collaboration and transformation that will undoubtedly follow. This inclusion not only solidifies the alliance’s stance as a key player in global geopolitics but also positions it to actively shape the future of the global economy and resource management.
